Job Description:
• Working as a flooring installer is not just physical work.
• It requires a lot more than just physical dexterity to be able to work as a flooring installer.
• Typically, flowing installers install ceramic and vinyl tiles and wooden carpeting to floors.
• They may work on new construction projects or ones that need revamping or renovation. Working as a flooring installer means that you need to be extremely skilled.
• While you do not need more than a high school diploma to be eligible for this position, you are required to possess floor installation skills – possibly derived from an apprenticeship.
• As a flooring installer, you will be working on a variety of projects, including people’s homes and commercial buildings.
• You will have to understand each project’s specifications in detail and be able to apply your knowledge accordingly.
• For instance, if you are working on a project in a house, you might not be able to apply your knowledge of commercial floor installation.
• Working as a floor installer means that you will have to be well-versed in cutting and shaping tiles and the various methods of installing them.
• You will need to be knowledgeable about water and soundproofing methods which are part of this work.
Some typical duties of a flooring installer include:
• Perform inspection of the work area to determine the type of flooring it needs
• Confer with clients to understand their needs and provide them with feedback on what materials can be used
• Make a list of the possible tile types that can be used in home and commercial projects
• Provide clients with information on pros and cons of using their choice of tiles
• Look through blueprints and building plans to determine how to begin a flooring installation project
• Cut and shape tiles to fit on floors, cabinets, and ceilings
• Install tiles using adhesives and hand tools and ensure that they are properly fitted in
• Perform preventative maintenance on already fitted tiles to ensure their longevity
• Measure and mark specific areas where tiles need to be installed
• Perform finishing work such as cleaning and polishing to ensure shine and completion
• Cut and install materials for sound and waterproofing purposes
• Remove old tiles and carpeting and perform thorough clean-up procedures
• Sweep, scrape, chip and sand dirt and irregularities from based surfaces and fill cracks with putty or cement
