Core Duties
Store and Merchandise Maintenance
Supervisors manage merchandise, stock shelves, manage store displays, and ensure all areas are clean and neat. This can include taking out trash, dusting, mopping floors, and other cleaning duties when necessary. They also open and close the store, depending on shifts. Supervisors are expected to keep track of inventory, preparing order for new batch of inventory.
Operate Cash Register
Supervisor will occasionally operate the cash register, processing customer payments, handling cash, debit, and credit transactions, and balancing the cash drawer.
Managing Store Clerks
The supervisor assigns tasks to clerks/customer service workers and makes sure they are doing them properly and efficiently. Supervisors must provide breaks to employees and ensure that the positions are covered as each worker rotates through. If employees call in sick or fail to report to work, supervisors must either find replacements or reorganize the help on hand to make up for the missing labor. Should employees commit errors or need to be reprimanded, the supervisor must either resolve the situation or alert the store manager, depending on the situation.
Customer Interaction
Occasionally on the front lines interacting with patrons. They welcome them, answer questions related to the products and services offered, and direct them to key locations within the store (a product aisle, the manager’s detail, bathroom, etc. ), maintaining a helpful and positive attitude in all interactions.
