DUTIES:

Ø Tillers are in the business of covering surfaces with tiles and are employed across household jobs as one of the finishing touches to certain rooms, but especially kitchens and bathrooms, as well as in big construction projects and shops.
Ø There’s also specialist work doing things like swimming pools, and outdoor titles in gardens are becoming more and more common.
Ø You’ll need to have a mind that works in a design.
Ø Align and straighten tile using levels, squares and straightedges.
Ø Determine and implement the best layout to achieve the desired pattern.
Ø Cut and shape tile to fit around obstacles and into odd spaces and corners, using hand and power cutting tools.
Ø Finish and dress the joints and wipe excess grout from between tiles, using a damp sponge.
Ø Apply mortar to tile back, position the tile and press or tap with trowel handle to affix tile to the base.
Ø Study blueprints and examine surface to be covered to determine the amount of material needed.
Ø Cut, surface, polish and install marble and granite and/or install pre-cast terrazzo, granite or marble units.
Ø Install and anchor fixtures in designated positions, using hand tools.
Ø Level concrete and allow drying.
Ø Build underbids and installs anchor bolts, wires and brackets.
Ø Prepare surfaces for tiling by attaching lath or waterproof paper, or by applying a cement mortar coat onto a metal screen.
Ø Mix, apply, and spread plaster, concrete, mortar, cement, mastic, glue or other adhesives to form a bed for the tiles, using a brush, trowel and screed.
Ø Prepare cost and labour estimates based on calculations of time and materials needed for the project.
Ø Measure and mark surface to be tiled, following blueprints.
Ø Cut tile backing to required size, using shears.
Ø Remove any old tile, grout and adhesive using chisels and scrapers and clean the surface carefully.
Ø Lay and set mosaic tiles to create decorative wall, mural and floor designs.
Ø Assist customers in the selection of tile and grout.
Ø Remove and replace cracked or damaged tile.
Ø Measure and cut metal lath to size for walls and ceilings, using tin snips.
Ø Select and order tile and other items to be installed, such as bathroom accessories, walls, panels, and cabinets, according to specifications.
Ø Mix and apply mortar or cement to edges and ends of drain tiles to seal halves and joints.
Ø Spread mastic or another adhesive base on the roof deck to form a base for promenade tile, using a serrated spreader.
Ø Apply a sealer to make grout stain- and water-resistant.
Ø Brush glue onto Manila paper on which design has been drawn and position tiles finished side down onto paper.


Education Required: Lower Secondary Assessment (PMB) or equivalent (BJCE)
